Un Hombre que Camina (A Man Walking) (2011-2014) video Hd, sound 5.1.
The sense of rhythm and timing is overpowered by the colossal sense of timelessness of this peculiar place. Shot in Uyuni, Bolivia, the film depcits world’s largest salt flat, a site that sits in a mountainous region at over twelve thousand feet above sea level. Ramirez’s work is deeply invested in the loss of regional identity, and the anachronistic dress of his “modern-day shaman” in the film is meant to reconcile the historical and cultural gaps between tribal traditions of a specific time and place and the all-too-prevalent homogeneity brought on by advanced capitalism. His festive yet ominous ceremonial mask, by extension, functions as a relic of colonial resistance: made by native coal miners to ward off Spanish invaders, the mask signals a need both past and present to preserve rituals passed down through future generations and across cultural genealogies.

Un hombre que camina
for: Enriquez Ramírez and Alfredo Ibarra (Lainus), 2018
Vinyl cover design for Chilean musician Alfredo Ibarra/Lainus with artist Enrique Ramírez. The soundtracks on the album expand on the music by Lainus for the film, Un hombre que camina (A man walking), previously shown at the 57th Venice Biennale. The album, produced by Hueso Records and pressed by WolfPack, will be released in November. A sound preview with Lainus will be presented at MAVI Museo Artes Visuales, Santiago, Chile, July 12, 2018. It has been a pleasure to work with Alfredo and Enrique again.
See memento : motif, 2012, part of a group exhibition in Valparaiso where Enrique was one of the other artists. Alfredo has made several compositions for sound to accompany other works I’ve made, most recently, the soundtrack to the film ‘i’ as part of AEIOU — Constructed/Projected.
